We All Do It, But Are You Doing It Right? Washing Hair 101!

Woman washing her hair

Washing our hair, we all do it! But are you doing it right? Now some of you might be wondering, isn't it just Lather, Rinse, Repeat? And while these simple back of the shampoo bottle instructions are indeed the core steps, if you really want to give your hair a thorough clean while keeping it healthy and protected, I'm bringing you all my tips in today's - Hair-Washing 101!

  1. Choose The Right Shampoo & Conditioner

First things first, selecting the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type is key. Whether your hair is dry, oily, textured, or coloured, finding the right product may require some testing, but it's an important step as it is the foundation of your hair care routine. It's alright to have some technology in your shampoo and conditioners, but once they are predominately plant-based so your hair is getting all those nutrients and vitamins.

2. Lukewarm Water Temperature

Next step is making sure the water is at a lukewarm temperature. Water that is too hot, or too cold can shock the scalp and dry out the hair. It's a bit like Goldilocks porridge you want to get it somewhere in-between so it's just right!

3. Shampoo Twice

Repeat - yes what the shampoo bottles say is true! When washing your hair, you want to shampoo twice. The first shampoo will clean any dirt, grime or build-up from the hair - whether that be environmental, or from products you might use. You'll notice in the first shampoo you won't get as much lather, and that's because it's breaking down all that dirt and build up. And that's also why the second shampoo is key - not only does it get rid of any excess dirt that's left behind. But it also allows the nutrients in the product to activate into the scalp and throughout the hair.

4. Massage / Don't Scrub.

While it's tempting to give your hair a good scrub, that's actually a no-no! Our hair is weakest when wet, so make sure you use a massage technique, over scrubbing with fingers which can lead to hair breakage.

5. Shampoo at The Roots

When shampooing make sure you only shampoo at the roots and then let the shampoo run down the hair. We don't want to shampoo roots to ends, as that can cause friction, dryness and damage to the hair.

6. Condition for Your Hair Type.

The best rule of thumb for conditioner is to apply it only where it's needed. For you that might be mid-length to ends, or just at the tips of the hair - depending on where your hair is driest. If you have highly bleached / coloured, damaged, textured or frizzy hair types then you may need more conditioning from roots to ends. Once applied, leave your conditioner on for 3-5 minutes if / when you have the time for the best results!

7. Blot / Pat Your Hair Dry

Finally, to finish off make sure you gently squeeze out the excess water from your hair and then blot, or gently pat dry with a towel. You want to avoid any rubbing as this causes friction and can lead to damage.

So there you have it, a few simple steps that can help you keep your hair at its best!
