The Dos and Don'ts of Coloring Your Hair at Home

Coloring your hair at home can be an affordable way to switch up your look. However, it can also be a daunting process, especially if you're new to it, or haven't had a lot of practice. So, I've put together a few DOs & DON'TS to help guide you when coloring your hair at home;

DO:

  1. Choose the Right Shade: Choosing the right shade of hair color is the most important step in the process. Take the time to determine your skin tone, eye color, and natural hair color to find a shade that will complement your features.

  2. Read the Instructions: Always read the instructions that come with your hair color kit before you begin. Make sure you understand the steps, the timing, and any special precautions you need to take.

  3. Protect Your Skin: Apply petroleum jelly or a thick cream around your hairline and ears to prevent the color from staining your skin.

  4. Section Your Hair: Divide your hair into sections to ensure that the color is applied evenly. Use clips or hair ties to secure each section.

  5. Follow the Timing: It's important to follow the timing instructions on the hair color kit. Leaving the color on for too long can damage your hair, while not leaving it on long enough can result in uneven color.

DON'T:

  1. Rush the Process: Coloring your hair takes time. Don't rush through it or try to take shortcuts. This can result in uneven color or damage to your hair.

  2. Mix Different Brands: It's never a good idea to mix different hair color brands. Each brand uses different ingredients, and mixing them can result in a chemical reaction that damages your hair.

  3. Overlap Color: If you're coloring your hair at home, it's important to avoid overlapping the color. This means that you should avoid applying the color to areas that have already been colored.

  4. Use Hot Water: After you've colored your hair, avoid using hot water when you rinse it out. Hot water can strip the color from your hair and cause it to fade faster.

  5. Forget to Condition: Conditioning your hair after you've colored it is essential to maintaining healthy, vibrant locks. Use a conditioner that's designed for color-treated hair to keep your hair soft, shiny, and nourished.

I hope you find these tips helpful, and remember, if you're unsure about anything, it's always best to seek the advice of a professional.
