7 Surprising Hair Mistakes That Are Secretly Damaging Your Locks!

We all want luscious healthy hair, and if you've been following along here a while you're most likely already using good quality products free from harsh chemicals, and giving your hair the love it deserves! However, despite our best efforts, there are mistakes we make unknowingly that can cause damage to our hair. But fear not! I'm going to break them down for you, so you can say good-bye to damage, and hello to happy healthy hair!

  1. Over-Washing

While it's important we keep our hair clean, over-washing can strip it of its natural oils leaving hair dry, brittle and prone to breakage. On average washing your hair every three days is best, as this allows time for the natural oils to move down the hair shaft. I know this can be hard for some, but you can try wearing a headband, or a loose messy bun to get the extra day out of it.

2. Hot Showers

I LOVE a hot shower as much as the next, but did you know they can actually be harmful for your hair? Hot water can strip the natural oils from your scalp, leaving it dry. And a dry scalp can be prone to flakiness. So instead, save the blast of heat for the body, and use lukewarm or even cool water on your hair, to help keep it hydrated and your scalps natural oils balanced.

3. Rough Towel Drying

Ok, I'm sure we've all been guilty of this one at some stage - hello rushed mornings! But rubbing wet hair vigorously with a towel can cause friction and breakage. It's best to first squeeze all excess water from your hair, and then gently pat it dry. You could also use a micro-fibre towel, or an old cotton t-shirt which is kinder to your hair than your usual bath towel.

4. Overusing Heat Tools

Hair dryers, flat irons, and curling irons are a godsend when it comes to styling. But used in excess they can overheat and damage your hair, causing it to become dry and frizzy. A good approach is to use them for occasions only. And don't forget the golden rule when you do use heat tools - always apply a heat protectant spray to your hair first, like AOB Miracle Spray which protects up to 420ºF/220ºC.

5. Neglecting Regular Trims

It's tempting when growing out your hair to skip your regular trim. And I get it, when it comes to hair growth you're definitely playing the long game! (ba-dum-ch...) But on a serious note, split ends and breakage travel up the hair shaft, so neglecting regular trims can lead to even further damage. To maintain your healthy hair, schedule a trim every 8-12 weeks.

6. Tight Hairstyles

While hairstyles like snatched-back ponytails, a sleek bun or taut braids can look fabulous and even give you a bit of a facelift!! Wearing these tight hairstyles regularly should be avoided, as the pull from them causes tension and stress on your hair follicles. Over-time this can lead to breakage, and depending on the extremity and duration possibly even some hair loss. Instead give your hair a break and wear it down and free! Or, if you need it tied up, try a loose variation like a soft pony tail, a messy bun or a loose braid.

7. Using The Wrong Hairbrush

Believe it or not, using the wrong hairbrush can cause damage to your hair! It's best to avoid brushes with sharp metal bristles, or bristles that are too widely spaced as they can cause tugging and breakage. Instead opt for brushes that use soft / natural bristles, or use a wide tooth comb to detangle your hair without causing breakage.

So there you have it, with these tips a little care will go a long way in maintaining healthy hair!
