Have you ever noticed that your hair feels dry, brittle, and lacking luster despite your best efforts to keep it healthy? Well, the culprit might just be lurking right in your shower - hard water! In this blog, I'll give you a quick run-down what hard water is, how it can damage your precious locks, and five tips to combat its effects!

What is Hard Water?

Before we jump into the specifics, let's understand what hard water actually is. Hard water contains high levels of minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron. These minerals dissolve in water as it flows through rocks and soil, leaving behind mineral deposits. And while hard water is not harmful to our health, it can wreak havoc on our hair!

The Struggles of Hard Water on Hair

Ok, so now you might be wondering - how exactly hard water can damage our hair? Well, the mineral build-up on our hair shafts can make them appear dull, dry, and lifeless. These minerals can also combine with the natural oils on our scalp, creating a sticky residue that weighs our hair down, and this can make it harder for moisture to penetrate our strands, resulting in frizz and breakage.

5 Tips to Help Combat Hard Water Damage

Now that we know the enemy, let's arm ourselves with some simple remedies to combat the effects of hard water on our hair:

  1. Shower Filter: My top tip is to install a shower filter to reduce the mineral content in your water. These filters are designed to remove impurities and provide you with softer water for healthier hair. It's like giving your hair a mini-spa treatment every time you shower! I understand this does come at a cost, so if you're looking for more affordable options, please read on.

  2. Clarifying Shampoo: Invest in a good clarifying shampoo that is specially formulated to remove mineral build-up from your hair. Use it once a week, (or less, depending on your hair type) to help give your locks a fresh start.

  3. Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse: On occasion try an apple cider vinegar rinse. Prepare a AVC rinse by mixing 2 to 4 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 16 ounces of water. After shampooing, pour the mixture over your hair, massage it into your scalp, and rinse thoroughly. The apple cider vinegar will help dissolve the mineral residue, leaving your hair shinier and softer. (Remember, it's important to mix the ACV with water before applying to the scalp. And as always when trying something new - you may want to do a patch test first to check for any irritability.)

  4. Bottled or Distilled Water: If all else fails, you can opt for washing your hair with bottled or distilled water. While this may not be the most convenient solution, it can help minimize the impact of hard water on your hair.

  5. Additional Hair Care Tips; To keep your hair in top shape, here are some bonus tips:

  • Deep Conditioning: Treat your hair to a deep conditioning treatment regularly to restore moisture and nourish your strands.

  • Hair Oils: Incorporate natural oils like coconut oil, argan oil, or jojoba oil into your hair care routine. These oils can provide an extra layer of protection against the harsh effects of hard water.

So there you have it! By exploring filtering options, investing in the right hair care products and pampering your hair with some extra TLC, you can say goodbye to those dull and lifeless strands, and hello to healthy vibrant hair!

Note: While the remedies mentioned in this blog can help combat the effects of hard water, it's always a good idea to consult a professional hairstylist for personalized advice.
